Who is the Green Man? Found throughout the world, the Green Man watches over and protects crops and symbolizes rebirth each spring though the cycle of the seasons. For Olsen Family Vineyards, the Green Man is a guiding force in recognizing the importance of terroir in our Viridian Wines. As a symbol and motif, the Green Man captures the essence of the dense woods and lush growth of our Willamette Valley based vineyards, and the birth of our wine brand in 2004.
The Green Man is familiar to students of ancient and medieval culture. He is encountered throughout Europe and was adopted by the Church as it moved north into the continent.
Wikipedia says: … Found in many cultures around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative deities springing up in different cultures throughout the ages. Primarily it is interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, or “renaissance,” representing the cycle of growth each spring.
As a fifth generation family farm, Olsen feels a particular kinship with the Green Man, who is both talisman and mascot to Viridian Wines, protecting our vines each season. A classic nod to history with strong ties to the land, no other symbol so ideally represents the essence of Viridian Wines.
